Good point, I really don't care what they speak. I just wish some of the folks that are taking advantage of the situation would lose their leverage. All I really want is for the folks that want to come here to make a better life, pay taxes and SS and be able to draw the same when they get to the right age. Seems that we have a "Keep'em workin' for nothin' " mentality in some of our offices today. Perhaps it is time some of the labor unions made a comeback. It sure seems that with the record profits that the oil companies, are getting their share. I know the coal company I work for does ALL it can it inflate cost figures and confuse us about how much the coal is really sold for. Some of ours goes for better than $100 dollars a ton. In response to El6pn. If I went to live in another country I would definely learn the language. I wouldnt expect those from others country to learn English to accomodate me while I was lived in their country. I would not get frusterated with them for not knowing English. Its very unfortunate that a lack of communication causes a lot of frustations between Americans and immigrants. Kinda like a few scenes from the movie Crash. Im not saying it frustrates me though, barely being able to understand someone I mean. Im a very patient person, and I speak with immigrants that live on the West Coast who speak very poor english all day long it seems at work. Ive never had a problem with them. Most of my co workers seem to dread tryin to communicate with them. Its very rewarding to me personally though to speak with them and help them out with something that otherwise is extremely frusterating to them it seems. They are usually very grateful people, unlike some American born arseholes that I deal with.

All I was saying though orginally, is that some dont even try to learn. Which they should if they are gonna live here. That is all.

Just my irrational thoughts.

If you plan to visit or live in another country, would you not consider learning the language.
If i was going to Mexico, would i not consider learning Spanish, since is the primary language.
I don't care if people come here now as legals. And all of your points are well taken.
My point is at what point do we stop letting people in?
It's good to be all about we can and have done this.
But what about some reality.

A few where what legal citizens. Did they give a crap about the those they helped kill?

Yeah we owe those that were here before us, the native americans or indian population. But how about a little reality also and butt kissin aside on here.
We can't afford to take a back seat to miniumum wage and foodstamps and medicaid.
If we do what does that do to our economy?
Let's be a bit realistic. I mean i know today that is unheard of but let's try at least.

I think there was a movie about it. The black people who served in the 54th regiment, pre and post Civil War. They fought for their freedom during our Civil War.

Let them come in and ruin our economy and and structure and say we owe it.
Um now and dont' care who i po or make mad. We may owe the native indians before we arrived. But i don't remember reading about no pre mexican society.

One famous General wrote about the demise of the US and how to attack it. It was attack it from within, while invading it from without.

I thought i seen in a poll. Where Spanish was now the leading lanuage in the US.

To me it's just not about the language. We teach or use to teach Spanish in highschool. I still know enough to get by.

My problem is letting those come here and stay, and not become citizens will eventually do to our economy.
People don't be fooled. Big time farmers in Texas and the Southwest and some sections of the southeast love this cheap labor pool. And money paid directly out to these helpers. NO taxes cut, no help to the US economy besides what they purchase. Which isn't much, because they can travel back home and live good.

I just hate to see what it will eventually do to our own economy. You've not seen unemployment yet. Wait till we all begin to lose our jobs, for people who think minimum wage is great, and foodstamps and medicaid. And our country will give it to them and them illegal and won't give to those here who need it. Well some that is. You still have here who abuse the system. They just know how to play it.

If their legal that is fine as long as their paying their way.
If their illegal give them a time to become legal and if they don't, begin becoming a tax paying citizen. And if not send them home. Hey and i know they can teach English in Mexico to can't they?

Anyone remember 9 / 11 / 01. That happened from within. From illegals we let come here, think a couple were even US citizens or had citizenship.

And another good idea. If they want to come here so bad. See how bad they want to defend this great country they want to come to.
We need troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. That would be a good citizenship test. And I know our military can teach them English and at a fair price. And working side by side wiht our soldiers coming home, it will make the relationship easier, when they come home to work.

Oh wait i forgot. Our returning soldiers most can't find a job. And that was even a story on WCYB a few weeks ago. Dang. Oh well open the doors and let everyone on in. We don't have enough problems. Do we? Sarcasim

ya know......... if your family hadnt come to this country illegally, fleeing a country where they couldnt live and provide for their family, you would probably still be in africa/asia/europe/south america/ wherever it is that your ancestors came from.

Yeaaaa.....during a time when America needed all the workers it could get and we were trying to build some kind of economy. In a time like now, we have all we can handle with good, honest Americans trying to find decent work to support their own, American bred families. We no longer need others coming and taking jobs from us. Mexicans are portrayed to be fruit pickers and such, but I know some in this area that are making 8..9 dollars an hour and they can't even speak our language? I know a lot of people that would love to have some of their jobs, but because they would have to be paid more, they can't get it and lose it to a illegal Mexican that dosen't even pay taxes, yet, when they get sick or something, who's paying....us..thats who. I feel that Bush should make some major changes and crack down on these illegal immigrants. Before long, the Mexicans are going to be driving us to Canada and looking for jobs...

Its not like these immigrants are taking good jobs from Americans. If you think that your crazy, they are taking very low wage jobs that, quite frankly most Americans wont do unless your just outta high school. If Congress wants to do something to help our economy, they need to raise the minimun wage. It hasnt been raised since 1997. Why dont they raise it? I guess theres no need to because they already have all the illegal aliens working a lot of these crap jobs, but hey lets keep giving huge tax breaks to big businesses. Lets keep making the rich richer, and the poor more unmotivated. This country just keeps heading in the wrong direction, and yes you have to start at the top when it comes to why it's getting worse.

Im only saying....jobs that we have in our area. Do we need much education, could a Mexican do the work?...yes. Coal mines, coal truck driving..basically, our local economy. Our jobs get taken..we drive others out of jobs. If you really look at it, the illegal immigrants are awful on our economy. Most work illegally and work for such low wages.

Last time I checked we didnt live anywhere near the boarder. So I really doubt any "illegal immigrants" are in Southwest Virginia, if so its a very small percentage.

Maybe some of them Little Mexico women are illegal, but I sure dang glad they are here. American's best version of mexican food is cheaply made food from Taco Bell.
